Never underestimate a bottle of mouthwash.
Upon watching this film, sent to me by director Ross Birks, I knew exactly what style I wanted to achieve. With the experimental short based around the character chugging mouthwash, I envisaged the music to being built around samples of the human voice.
Taking influence from Cristobal Tapia de Veer’s score for Utopia, I wrote the main theme with a quirky low male voice, and backing from a mellotron choir patch. The real eureka moment was when I found a sample library of the 90s hit toy ‘Speak and Spell’, which ended up forming the glitchy drums you hear throughout the score.
